The original definition of a cocktail — spirit, sugar, water, bitters — and the name comes from 1880s drinkers asking for one made the old-fashioned way. Slow, spirit-forward and warming; dilution is the ingredient you control.

Add to a mixing glass
60 ml120 ml180 ml240 ml Bourbon— not in stock 10 ml20 ml30 ml40 ml Sugar syrup (2:1)— not in stock 3 dashes6 dashes9 dashes12 dashes Angostura bitters— not in stock Stir with cubed ice for a good 30 seconds, adding ice as it melts
Strain into an old-fashioned glass over one large ice cube
Garnish with orange zest twist
